Monsters, mysteries, and marvels
This is a Spotify playlist inspired by the spooky season, but if you’re like me, you can get down with the feel year round. It’s devious and delightful. You get Nina Simone, Marilyn Manson, Ibeyi, Nancy Sinatra, Depeche Mode, and more all in one wicked good playlist.
This is a Spotify playlist that’s a big ol’ mixed bag of celebrating being human. You got some Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson, Daft Punk, Solange, Parliament, Big Freedia, Kes, Celia Cruz, Miriam Makeba, Janelle Monae, Panic! At the Disco, and more. We begin with an African Drum Invocation with vocals by the grande dame Jessye Norman.
On the field
This is a Spotify playlist of marching band and drum corp music. Marching band was a crucial part of my adolescence and younger adult years, so I had to do this. Like a literal pep rally. I haven’t found any HBCU songs on Spotify yet, but if/when I do, I will add them.
This Spotify list is also inspired by my many years in band, but this walk down memory lane is for those months of roughly December to May – concert season. It includes ensembles performing some of the songs I actually played during high school and college. We’ve got some Grainger, Holst, Ticheli, Saint-Saens, and more.
This is a Spotify playlist of lyrical and expressive songs for concert/symphonic ensembles. Those songs that break and refashion your heart with beauty. This one does a great job of helping calm my mind. Chesnokov, Eric Whitacre, Julie Giroux, Rachmaninoff, and more.
Been through some sh*t
This is a Spotify playlist I made to help me with all the feels when I was going through a difficult time and needed to process emotions and find a way to recover a sense of safety within myself. Sometimes you just have to go through. Includes JoJo, Cynthia Erivo, Florence + The Machine, Kacey Musgraves, and more.
